North meets south in Bergell. Due to its remote location on the southern side of the Alps, a largely intact and fascinating cultural landscape is waiting to be discovered. Between dramatic mountain formations and the chestnut forest, a world full of climatic contrasts stretches out before you.
Bergell is characterised by a wide variety of flora and fauna, which is second to none. Varied hiking trails – from the easy valley trail to the mountainous high-level trail – can be discovered here. On the Via Bregaglia adventure hike, the trail passes through a number of villages and features the highlights of Graubünden’s southern valley along the way.
Every village has its unique character. Castasegna is named after one of the most beautiful chestnut forests in Europe, stretching far above the village.
Giovanni Segantini was almost certainly sitting in the garden of the Palazzo Salis when he claimed that Soglio was "the gateway to paradise". The place is also famous for its abundance of flowers – nothing could be more romantic. The charming village with its 300 inhabitants is situated on a sunny plateau. The church of St. Lorenzo is still considered to be an important landmark of this wonderful beauty spot.
In the peaceful village of Borgonovo lie the birthplace and the graves of the artists Alberto and Diego Giacometti. Vicosoprano used to be the main village in the valley and the location of the main court. The affluence of its citizens is still visible today. Patrician houses decorated with sgraffito and wrought-iron grilles adorn the village.
The Albigna dam is well worth a visit. A small funicular brings visitors to the dam which is located at a dizzying altitude.
