Skiking

On and Off-Road Skating or "Skiking"

The "skike" is a piece of sports equipment from Nordic Inline Skating. The term is composed of the elements "skate" and "bike". Because they can be used to cover distances away from made-up roads and paths, "skikes" are also known as "Cross Skates".

In contrast to inline skates, a "skike" has only two wheels in front of and behind the foot. The wheels have a diameter of 15 cm and are filled with air. The back wheel of a "skike" is fitted with a robust braking system which is operated with the calf. "Skikes" can be used with normal gym, jogging, or trekking shoes. The foot is secured by means of a velcro fastener.

"Skikes" are used in conjunction with Nordic Blading sticks. These are longer than Nordic Walking sticks (body height * 0.9 +/- 5 cm). The sequence of movements corresponds to the movement in cross-country skating. "Skikes" are therefore suitable as all-year-round sports equipment for cross-country athletes and biathletes. With the large air-filled wheels, cross skaters can cover ground on forest paths and dirt roads, and other uneven terrain.

Cross skating with "skikes" is a sport which is easy on the joints and can represent an alternative to endurance sports such as inline skating, Nordic Walking or jogging. By combining the use of both arms and legs, cross skating trains more of the body’s muscle groups than normal inline skating or running.
