It doesn’t get crazier than this. Ice-clad rock walls and frozen waterfalls are not only impressive to look at, they are also climbed from all sides – using ice picks and specialised crampons. This extreme sport requires all the skills of mountain climbing, a head for heights and excellent physical fitness.
Pontresina has become an important centre for ice climbing. Each winter great ice walls with imposing icicles form on the Corn da Diavolezza and in the Pontresina ravine. Dedicated mountain guides apply water to the rocks, which helps form an optimal ice density and gives the climbers more variety.
Climbing the ice walls is done at your own risk. Good ice climbing skills and suitable equipment are needed.
