Ski tours in Pontresina, the Engadine

Ski tours are not just for scouts or for the sort of people who take a thermos to the office or get married wearing a fleece. Today, an ever increasing number of sports enthusiasts are attracted to the high mountains. Getting up close and personal with nature away from the crowded slopes is an amazing experience. A deep-snow downhill run on pristine slopes is the reward of often several hours and an exhausting climb. The Bernina Range in Pontresina and the surrounding peaks are perfect for tour excursions – be it on skis or snowboards.

Touring skis glide effortlessly through the powder snow – like floating through a silent, pristine winter wonderland.

Springtime is the perfect time for tours in the Engadine

Pontresina is particularly popular with ski tour fans in the springtime. Rope parties climb the Piz Palü, cross the Gemsfreiheit or pass labyrinthine glacier fields. Neither beginners nor locals should go alone – it is always advisable to have a guide or go with a guided group tour. If you want to acquaint yourself with climbing skins and touring bindings for the first time, it is best to book an introductory course with the Pontresina Mountaineering School.

Tour Tip Gemsfreiheit

The Gemsfreiheit is considered to be one of the most beautiful ski tours in the Engadine. From the Diavolezza, the route takes you down to the Pers Glacier. From there you will head off wearing skins along the north face of the Piz Palü toward Fortezzagrat. After about two hours of climbing, tourers finally reach the Gemsfreiheit at 3,186 metres above sea level amidst the glaciers of the Bernina Range. After a well-deserved break at the summit, it’s time for some action:
1,300 vertical metres of fantastic downhill run toward the Morteratsch restaurant. Despite all the natural beauty, personal safety is paramount. Tour skiers should therefore always check current avalanche conditions before setting off on a tour. Any information regarding snow conditions can be seen in the daily bulletin of the Snow and Avalanche Research SLF Davos.
