Movie evening Golay

Museum Alpin, Via Maistra 199:
Thu, 11.08.2022 | 6.00 pm - 8.00 pm

In collaboration with the AV Media Portal of the Cantonal Library of the Grisons, an impressive film collage with excerpts from the Golay Collection has been created.

Mountain experiences and everyday life in and around Pontresina from the 1930s to the 1960s are shown.

"The most important thing in my life was alpinism" Charles Golay (1897-1988)
The pharmacist and Major Charles Golay from Pontresina is remembered for his spectacular and unconventional alpine expeditions with the Mountain Brigade 12: The ascents "With a company on Piz Palü" (winter 1939), "With 160 men on Piz Bernina" (summer 1940), Piz Glüschaint (winter 1941) were documented on camera by Bartholome Schocher, Egon Sommer and Andreas Pedrett - unfortunately most of the original films were lost in the 1980s when they were transferred for military films.
The majority of Charles Golay´s more familiar films were shot by his wife Clara Golay-Abt and remained in the family. In 2020, they were donated to the Cantonal Library of the Grisons, which now stores the analogue originals in the special air-conditioned stacks and secures newly created digital copies in the digital long-term archive. Access to the historically valuable documents is provided by the AV Media Portal Graubünden.

The Cantonal Library of the Grisons collects, digitises and archives audiovisual media from the mountain canton and makes them accessible: av-medienportal.gr.ch
