From conquering the Bernina massif
to modern alpinism - the pioneers of
mountaineering from Pontresina

Museum Alpin

The Museum Alpin is a multifaceted exhibition site for the mountain world: Fauna, flora, and geology of the mountains of Grisons region are presented here as well as Alpine culture. The exhibitions about summer and winter tourism are something of a highlight, providing an insight into the pioneering days of mountaineering, from the conquest of the Bernina Range to modern alpinism.

Also well worth a visit is the exhibition on the development of SAC huts and the multimedia presentations on ”Mountain experience“, ”Alpine flowers“ and ”Butterflies“. New: the permanent exhibition ‘Cameramuseum-Pontresina collecziun Flury-Lochau’.

From 10 June 2024, the Museum Alpin Pontresina will also be presenting an exhibition entitled "Guido Baselgia - In the Eye of the Light" by the photographic artist Guido Baselgia, who was born in Chur in 1953 and grew up in Pontresina.
Baselgia himself, who is considered one of Switzerland's most outstanding photographers, has conceived and curated the impressive exhibition.

The exhibition is part of the joint project "Spendur et Sumbriva - Light and Shadow in the Engadin" organised by the association "Chesas da cultura Engiadina (Engadin Houses of Culture)". The association, which promotes culture in the Engadin, was founded in 2021 and consists of numerous cultural institutions from all over the Upper Engadin.

The Museum Alpin, founded in 1971 by the Association of Mountain Guides Pontresina, is located in Pontresina on Chesa Delnon in a stately Engadine building dating from 1716. Today, members of the association "Pro Museum Alpin Pontresina" contribute to the museum’s operation. You can help, too: as an active member for CHF 50.- or as a patron member for CHF 100.- per year.
