Museum Alpin

Museum Alpin Pontresina
In the Museum Alpin, one can enjoy details of the mountain world with a large variety of exhibits. The fauna, flora and geology of the Grisons Mountains are presented here, as is Alpine culture. The exhibitions on Summer and Winter alpinism are a special highlight. They exhibit an insight into the pioneering days of mountaineering, the conquest of the high alpine Bernina Massif and the development of modern alpinism, as well.

Further exhibits at the Museum Alpin

Also worth seeing are the exhibition on the development of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) huts and the multimedia shows "Mountain Experience," "Alpine Flowers," and "Butterflies." The permanent exhibition "Camera Museum Pontresina Flury-Lochau Collection" is one of the museum's treasures. A visit to the museum can be rounded off with a quiet moment in the "POSETTA Alpine Garden."

Furthermore, the Pontresina Alpine Museum presents an exciting special exhibition entitled "PERMAFROST" from June 8 to October 24, 2026, and from December 12, 2026, to April 3, 2027:
"The Schafberg above Pontresina is one of the most important permafrost areas in Switzerland and has been a key location for alpine research for decades. The permanently frozen subsoil shapes the stability of scree and rock slopes and influences numerous geomorphological processes." Since the 1980s, soil temperatures, subsurface movements, and the interactions between climate, rock, water, and ice have been systematically investigated here. Thanks to long-term observations and modern measurement methods, the Schafberg has developed into an important open-air laboratory, providing valuable insights into the dynamics of permafrost landscapes. A current example of addressing the challenges of high mountain environments can be found at Piz Nair/St. Moritz. There, in 2025, thermosiphons were installed for the first time in Europe to protect alpine infrastructure. The project exemplifies new technical approaches to managing permafrost and demonstrates how scientific findings are increasingly being translated into practical solutions.
