Albula Tunnel
Since June 12, 2024, Rhaetian Railway trains have been running through the Albula Tunnel II on the Albula Line. The old tunnel was decommissioned after 121 years of service and will be converted into a safety tunnel by 2026. Our tip: Stop off at the Spinas Inn at the end of the tunnel. You can return either on foot, by carriage, or by train.
The Albula Tunnel I of the Rhaetian Railway was opened in 1903. It is part of the Albula line Chur - St. Moritz, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 together with the Bernina line. On June 9, 2024, after approx ten years of construction work, the new Albula Tunnel II was inaugurated with a festival and then opened to operation. A little peace and quiet has returned to Spinas, and visitors can admire the bypass channel for fish and the renaturalized Beverin floodplain below the station.
The Albula Tunnel I will no longer be used for rail traffic in the future. The RhB will convert it into a safety tunnel by 2026. If you would like to find out more about the two tunnels and Alp Spinas, make a note of the last weekend in June, when two events are expected to take place in Spinas on the occasion of Open Doors Engadin. In addition, a digital themed trail will be inaugurated during the summer of 2024.
