Historic village centre

During the 16th and 17th centuries, an impressive enclosed square was created in the middle of the village, surrounded by burgher and patrician houses. Until 100 years ago, the Upper Engadine Landsgemeinde was held on this square. Zuoz was not built along the main road like most villages in the Upper Engadine, but developed from the episcopal headquarters and the Dorta farm. The large number of dignified houses with the typical Engadine bay windows and sgraffito decorations is striking. The late Romanesque chapel of San Bastiaun and the Gothic church of Santa Chatrigna also contribute to the village's adornment.
