Nietzsche memorial stone on the Chastè peninsula

The Chastè peninsula, the jewel of Lake Sils – poets and philosophers would have liked to stay here forever. For Friedrich Nietzsche, too, it was one of the most beautiful spots in the Engadine. The Nietzsche memorial stone at the southern tip was erected in his memory in the year of his death (1900). A stonemason from Promontogno carved verses from Zarathustra into the memorial plaque, which is integrated into a block of rock.

O man! Pay attention!
What does the deep midnight say?
"I slept, I slept—,
From a deep dream I have awakened:—
The world is deep,
And deeper than the day imagined.
Deep is its woe—,
Pleasure—deeper even than heartache:
Woe says: Pass away!
But all pleasure desires eternity—,
desires deep, deep eternity!"

Here, at the southern end of the peninsula, the view over Lake Sils and the Piz da la Margna is particularly beautiful. The reflections in the water create exceptional lighting conditions.

In winter, no public winter hiking trails are maintained on the Chastè peninsula.
