Travel & Mobility

Mobility Pontresina
The vacation destination of Pontresina lies in the centre of the Upper Engadin Valley, at the entrance to the Val Bernina side valley and lies in a sunny, sheltered location. Our twin town of St. Moritz is only seven kilometres distant. The public transport system, which is outstanding for an Alpine holiday town, takes you to the mountain railways, to the neighbouring Engadin villages and to the starting-off points for hiking or adventures of all other kinds. The UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railway carries guests on an exciting journey from the glaciers down to the palm trees around Poschiavo and onward through to Tirano in Italy at the end of the line. There is a bus service, which stops at the gateway to the Swiss National Park. In Summer, there are connections to Livigno (Italy) and with the Palm Express and other bus connections, visitors can also easily visit Lake Como or the Swiss Ticino and Lugano from Pontresina.

The Upper Engadin can be explored with the Rhaetian Railway, but also by private car from all directions via well-developed Alpine passes. However, one should always keep an eye on the weather. The Rhaetian Railway's car ferry service is also available via the Vereina Tunnel through to Klosters.

The UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railway

The modern regional trains of the Bernina line and the world-famous ‘Bernina Express’ run past the gigantic Morteratsch Glacier, and climb without rack and pinion assistance over the highest railway Alpine pass in Europe (2,253 m) and wind their way down into the Valposchiavo Valley in bold hairpin bends. Highlights of the UNESCO Southern Part of the Grisons Route through the Bernina Glaciers adventure region include the Montebello Curve, Lago Bianco, Alp Grüm and the Brusio Circular Viaduct. When travelling from the north on the Albula Line, there is also the world-famous and boldly curved Landwasser Viaduct to experience and admire. The "Kleine Rote" as the railway is sometimes termed is the narrow-gauge railway of our hearts and an Alpine lifeline in the tourist Canton of the Grisons’. A rolling highlight, which connects pretty mountain villages, languages and cultures throughout wild and romantic landscapes.
