Summer and Winter - sport and exercise in the high alpine mountains are part of Pontresina's DNA. Whether for popular sports or as a training centre for ambitious, elite athletes, the Upper Engadin and its high plateau are world-famous in the sports’ scene. High-altitude training has been part of programmes here for generations in a wide variety of disciplines and at all times of year.

Endurance athletes in particular benefit from the high altitude of Pontresina and the surrounding area, between 1,800 to 4,049 metres above sea level. Those who train here in the "Banqueting Hall of the Alps" benefit from the dry, stimulating alpine climate and ideal weather conditions. The Engadin is one of the regions in Switzerland with the least rainfall and has an over-average number of sunny days in the year.

As an outdoor Eldorado at the heart of the Engadin Ski Marathon Route, the so-called "Engadin Arena", the mountaineering village of Pontresina, scores with further benefits. Thanks to its location in the Upper Engadin Val Bernina, the traditional mountaineering village enjoys a particularly well wind-protected location and a local microclimate from side valley to side valley.
